First birthday Invitation of our Daughter

Having a kids is the best gift ever, this is the most happening thing of the life. 

As our daughter turns one, we were so happy and want to do the best birthday celebration for her.

So we started with the birthday Invitation which is based on a theme (Minnie) party .

So here is the birthday Invitation which we made,

Going on onsite trip???

Every time I travel onsite, I feel like forgetting something. So, I thought of writing a post as reference for people who need to travel on short term trips (anything between 2-6 months).

Few things to consider while preparing this list:

• What type of accommodation you are going to get
• Search the surroundings near the accommodation
• Are you going to cook?
• Season when you are going to travel
• Distance between office & home

Things to check:

• Weather & Temperature: Do a bit of research on the temperature & the weather for your trip. You may refer various websites like Accuweather, The weather channel, etc. Carry clothes based on the temperature. 
• For summers, don't forget to carry your sunscreen lotion
• For rainy season, don't forget to carry umbrella/raincoat.
• For winter season, do carry Jacket, woolen cap, gloves, muffler etc
• Commute options: Check the distance between office & home using Google Maps. 
• Do check for the commute options. If you going to commute by bus, do check for the fare options (mainly one time fare).
• Most of the commute options don't refund you change. So, keep the exact change with you
• If you going to commute by railway system, check for the weekly/monthly ticket systems. Some places don't accept credit card for weekly tickets. So, do carry sufficient cash on the first day travel.
• Things to see around: Unless you are a internet freak, you would prefer to roam around and see different places (Who would not want to see the new cities ;)  ). Search for the sight seeing locations of the city & around city.
• Some places like Statue of Liberty have a pre-booking. Check for the waiting period (when I went to New York, waiting was 3 months :( ). You may also want to book before you actually reach the city.
• Some places/tours are operational only during certain seasons/months (like Maid Of the mist on Niagara falls)
• You may want to search for the coupons/sightseeing vouchers for various places in city. Some of the options you may consider are CityPASS, City Sightseeing, etc
• Do search options on Groupon, AnyCodes, etc
• Plan your visits properly based on weather
• Food joints: If you are not open to variety of food, or if you are a vegetarian, do search for various options near you.

• To call someone who will come & pick you
• If you have a break journey, try to arrange change for that currency
• If u have infants/kids, do take extra water bottle before you get out of flight
• Coloring book, toys & snacks for kids during travelling

Once you reach hotel/apartment, do get some change.

My first Icy Canada Winter 2013-14

Like many other people I had a dream to live in snow/icy place for a long term...

As when you are in vacation on this climate, your soul purpose is to make fun. But you can't imagine what kind of fun/trouble are facing by the local peoples who live there.

Fortunately, this year I got a chance to feel the icy winter of Canada... In initial days, I was very eager to see the snow fall. I was feeling very happy to roam in snow fall (It feels like cotton udh rahi ho). I never put my leg on bunch of snow (Now you think I am stupid but actually I personally feel that I should not scattered the design of snow). Wherever I saw, whether its tree, road, lake, hills or roof everywhere I found snow. It feels like I am in heaven.

But within 2 weeks my charm of snow had finished. As I had to go for grocery in this weather without any vehicle. Now you can imagine, why I am saying this (wearing 4 layers on body and 2 pair of socks didn't attack on weather plus carrying heavy grocery on hand becomes me penguin)

Things were not stop here, I was feeling very helpless when snow converts into ice (It is the condition when snow melt in day due to sunny weather and it convert into ice in night due to fall in temperature). Initially It looks very good but roads become very slippery on this time, many times I fall and injured myself.. 

In the starting of winter people said to me this was my first winter here that's why I was feeling too cold but at the end of the winter, same people told me that this winter was very severe. But the reality is, this winter was actually very cold as it breaks many past records. You can imagine my condition when you know that Niagara falls were also frozen for 2-3 days. So how sever the winter was...And this was my first winter in Canada... 

 

How to change OpenCart URL

In the world of website management, most of the times, we need to create website on a test link before they are ready to be published on web. In several other cases, host name of the company is changed resulting into change in the website URL.

So, we can say that it is very common to change the URL of website installations.
When we work on any CMS (Content Management System) tools, this may not be so easy and you may get tangled in the intricacies of CMS tools to achieve this.

After struggling a bit with OpenCart  , I decided to write this article as reference to others.

Change Home URL

Changing home URL in OpenCart is very easy. Just a few steps and you are done with it.

For Front End (Front Store)

1. Access installation files of your OpenCart instance (using FTP or the FileManager in your cPanel) and go to the root folder of your installation
2. You will find a file named config.php
3. Open this config.php file in an editor (If you are using FileManager, you will have something to edit the file in browser)
4. Find for the properties named 'HTTP_SERVER' & 'HTTPS_SERVER' in the file:
   
   // HTTP
define('HTTP_SERVER', 'http://vibhav.com/');

// HTTPS
define('HTTPS_SERVER', 'http://vibhav.com/');



5. Change the existing host name (highlighted above) to the new URL name and save the changes
6. After this file, the front store will start working well. However, the management backend (admin panel) will still not work after these changes.

For management backend (admin panel)

1. Access installation files of your OpenCart instance (using FTP or the FileManager in your cPanel) and go to the /admin folder of your installation
2. You will find a file named config.php
3. Open this config.php file in an editor (If you are using FileManager, you will have something to edit the file in browser)

How to keep one variable constant with other one changing in formula in MS Excel?

Today I will talk about a small tip on MS Excel.

Excel is one of the frequently tools in the life of an IT personal. We mostly use it to generate some report, various tables, charts etc.
One of the most common use case include calculating values of various rows in a column based on a formula which includes a value of a cell.

For example, in the below screenshot, based on the principal and duration specified on top, we would like to know the value of Simple Interest & Compound Interest based on different rate of interests.

Most of us start using some formula for the first cell (for example in this case value for cell B5 is "=B1*B2*B4") and then drag (or copy) that to other cells which need to have same formula. But ALAS!!! What you get is broken formula with a lot of errors or incorrect value (for example G5 would end up having value formula "=G1*G2*G4" which is incorrect).

One day without internet!

Can you imagine getting disconnected from world due to lack of internet connection ??

Now you are going to say big Nooooooooo, Ofcourse am too addicted to Internet, it doesn't a big deal.

For me personally, One day without internet is one day without oxygen.

My day start in front of laptop and it ends in front of laptop. I usually connected on social networking sites (ofcourse office work also going in parallel), Chatting, blogging and surfing that's all what I do on Internet.

wait wait wait.. It doesn't like I am doing all the time useless things, sometimes I'll do some kind of work like personal information of one friend transfer it to other...Ha Ha Ha (jokes apart)

Well now I have to be serious else you guys will think whats wrong with me today ..

In today's life style, it isn't possible or should say I don't have time to sit on a road side corner shop and meet/gossip with my friends (as most of them are not living nearby). So, to connect with them also, I have to depend on internet. Now technology has advanced so much that our household chores like electricity bill payment, banking and many more too need internet; without this I have to personally visit that places and everyone very well know these offices and their working style.

 

Also, as most of us work in IT companies, and most of our work depend on the offices in other locations, which connect to you with internet itself. (vaise ek raaz ki baat... jo sabko pata hai... it feels awesome when you don't have internet connectivity at office... Kaam se chhutkara chahein wo thode time ke liye hi sahi...)

Anyways, Internet has become a necessity of our life. Even though, I saw my neighborhood kids who are in 1st grade and they require Internet to finish their assignments and not only for school assignments they prefer to play computer games instead of physical/outdoor games. For them, electronic gadgets are like a toy. When they are only two years, they very well know that how to operate these gadgets.

Happiness is...

Sometimes I thought what is happiness or should I say what is real happiness!!!

According to Mahatma Gandhi “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”  

Well , Everyone has its own feelings and own definitions over this. But when I try to think over this then I come to a conclusion with...Happiness is nothing, it just a very little little things by which we can feel good internally...

• fighting with your brother/sister
  
• sharing your food with your best buddies
  
• chatting/talking to your long distance friends after so long
  
• working together to achieve a shared goal
  

Matheran (...forest on the forehead...)

Want to enjoy the beauty of nature?? Willing to see the valley?? Want to become a Kid again!!! Have potential to walk miles!!!

                        Then the answer is MATHERAN... 

Matheran is a Hill Station and a comes in the Raigad district, in Maharashtra, India. It is a hill station in Karjat Tahsil and is also the smallest hill station in India. It is located on the Western Ghats range. One big advantage is, it is a pollution free & noise free town. In todays world, there is no motor vehicle running inside the town. You can cover all the places by foot or you can take horse ride.

How to Reach:

• Mumbai to Matheran - 90 km, you can go there by bus or car.
• Pune to Matheran - 120 km, you can go there by bus or car.

(Also, Matheran could be reached by train. It's nearest railway station is Narel which lies on the Pune to Mumbai railway line. From Narel, you can also enjoy a ride of Toy Train (running on narrow gauge) to Matheran which takes around 1.5 hrs)

Best time to Visit:

September to March is the best time to visit there. You can see lush greenery, waterfalls and the lake full with water. However, people from Mumbai and Pune come to see every weekend mostly with their family as a part of their outing and relaxation.
Note : While visiting to Matheran, you must have 2 days in your hand then only you can cover all the places there.

Where to Stay:

There are number of hotels there, but as of my personal experience Hotel Rangoli Retreat is good, specially for vegetarians. It is in front of Matheran railway station and they provide Dine-In  also. So you don't have to roam here and there for food. Also sight seen points are not much far from that hotel.

Things to do:

• Narel - Matheran toy train.
• Horse Riding
• Valley Crossing is very good there.
• Good for shopping but don't forget to bargain.
• Various site seen point; Echo point, Charlotte lake etc.

 

Things to Carry:

• Umbrella/Raincoat
• Spare Cloths

(Matheran's weather are non predictable, so its better to carry these things to stay away from wet and mud)

Trip to Harihareshwar Beach...

What could be the best way to utilize a long weekend... ??

Thought of various options like relaxing at home... watching a lot of movies... lot of shopping (obviously for wife....) working on some dream projects... blah blah blah... but I finally decided to go out for an outing trip... 

With 2 days in hand... tried to find various options around Pune & Mumbai (could not get any good options, thanks to my laziness... ) 

After exploring a bit of options, we decided to go to a few beaches around Pune & Mumbai (itne [time] mein itnaich milenga). We packed our bags and left for Harihareshwar, Kashid & Murud-Janjira ...

I must say it was a very nice outing, relaxing from the busy schedule...

People might find a lot of reviews & comments about Kashid & Murud, but finding information for Harihareshwar is bit difficult. So thought of sharing my experiences @ Harihareshwar...


Harihareshwar is a town in Raigad district, in Maharashtra, India. It is also famous for a lord harihareshwar (shiva) temple. It is a small town with two beaches, one to the north and the other to the south of the temple.

How to Reach:

One can reach here from Mumbai as well as Pune:

• Mumbai to Harihareshwar - 193 km, you can go there by bus or car.
• Pune to Harihareshwar - 107 km, you can go there by bus or car.

Best time to Visit:

The best time to visit this place is September to March. However, if you love rains then you can go there in the month of July & August too.

Where to Stay:

There are two good resorts:
- Harihareshwar Beach Resort
- MTDC - Harihareshwar
We stayed at Harihareshwar Beach Resort and it is quite good. It is a sea facing resort and you can hear the sea waves in the night which feels very pleasant. Even the food options are decent enough and you don't have to go anywhere else for food.

Things to do:

• Various activities on Beach for everyone
• ATV Ride
• Banana ride
• Parasailing
• Horse riding
• a few Water sports
• Visit to Harihareshwar temple.

50 yrs of Indian Television

Today we have completed 50 years of India's first television channel, Doordarshan, or should say "Indian television".
Today television has become an integral part of our life and we cannot imagine passing a day without watching it. It is a source of entertainment, relaxation and time-pass for most of us. Its also a source of latest news, information and update analysis. 

Going into the past & memories down the lane...

Independent or self-dependent?

When we were in college (especially 4th year), most of us wanted to get a good job... The day we get jobs, we are very happy… as we are going to start our own life… life towards our financial independence… so that we don’t have to ask parents for monthly expenses.

After having a work experience of 3 yrs, I doubt if we can still say ourselves financially independent.

The more we grow... more we earn... the more our liabilities increase. Higher you grow, higher is the social status u need to maintain: a high-end cell phone, a good 2-wheeler/4-wheeler, good dressing style… etcetera etc. And, once you are married, you are gone. You can’t even dream of a situation when you are not earning.

So, I think, it will not be wrong in saying that even after earning 30-40K per month, we are not financially independent. Only the dependency has shifted from parents to self.

Well well well… just to clarify… nothing went wrong on my professional life in this recession time… but its just a thought which came in my mind IF I can even think of taking some risk in life and move back to pursue my interest & passion (details about it sometime later :) )

Recession Time

Employees in recession!

Today i got a mail from a friend explaining a story about recession & its effects on employees (mainly those employees who actually work so that company gets the revenue). I would like to share that story with you all.

Disclaimer: Following story is an art of imagination with some tints of (hidden) truth in it. Your views may differ (but i am sure that unless you are above a level of Director, you will also agree to it).

Sandeep received HIS pink slip today. He is shattered. He has worked very hard for three years. Suddenly the market is on a downward spiral, the company is not doing so well, and he is left without a job. How will he pay his bills now? How will he repay his EMI? What will he do?
   He went to his boss. The boss said, "The management said that I don't need a 10-member team; I can do with seven. So I was asked to give pink slips to three." "Why me?" demanded Sandeep. The boss explained, "We looked at your appraisal from last year and you were the second lowest, so I had to let you go. I am sorry." Sandeep started raising his voice, "You were the one who said that this appraisal business is all humbug, something you really don't believe in it. You only said that it was process and as far as you were concerned, it was just a tick mark. I believed you. And now it has cost me my job." "I am sorry," said boss, refusing to meet his eye.   There was one thing Sandeep's boss did not tell him about — the managers meeting where everyone made a list of their favourites and subsequently found reasons to put the rest on the chopping block. The method of elimination — appraisal scores in some cases, insubordination in another — did not matter to the management. What mattered was the reduction in headcount. Costs had to be brought down.   The CFO does not know Sandeep's name. For him Sandeep is but a statistic. All he told his CEO was, "We cannot pay all of them so let's reduce headcount from 120 to110 or maybe 100." The CEO said, "Maybe there is another option; we can reduce the salaries of the top management." The CFO glared at the CEO and said, "You can reduce your salary but not mine." None of the management was willing to cut their salary; so jobs had to go. Reasons were elaborately created to justify the pink slip. Now Sandeep has to fend for himself. He has no one's patronage. He is no one's favourite. He is a man without a leader. 
   One of the several versions of the story goes that there was a king, sometime identified as Harishchandra and sometime identified Ambarisha, who had an attack of dropsy — his body swelled up with fluid. He prayed to Varuna, god of water, and said, "If I am cured, I will sacrifice my son." As soon as he said this, he was cured. His limbs became normal. His fingers and face were no longer bloated. "My sacrifice?" asked Varuna. Now that he was cured, the king found it harder to part with his son. So he called the wise men of his kingdom, and told them to find a way out. "How can I make Varuna happy without losing my son?" he asked.
   The wise men said a son is defined in many ways according to the scriptures: one is the son you produce biologically, another is the son who is adopted and finally there is another son that you can buy. On hearing this king said, "Go buy me a son." The wise men went around the kingdom, but no man was willing to sell their son. How can our king ask us to part with a son, they wondered. Who would do such a thing?
   After a long search, the wise men found a poor priest willing to sell his son for the price of 100 cows. His name was Ajigarta. He said, "I have three sons. I will not sell my eldest son because he is very dear to me, and I cannot sell the youngest because he is dear to his mother. I will sell my middle son, Sunahshepa, because I have no choice. I am very poor and I need to feed my family."
   Thus, Sunahshepa became the son of the king and was brought to the palace on a golden palanquin. He was quite excited until, after being fed and clothed and given gifts meant for princes, he was taken and tied to a sacrificial post. "You, Sunahshepa, are to be sacrificed to Varuna so that your father, the king, is free of debt," said the wise men. Realising his hopeless situation, Sunahshepa began to cry.
   The executioner was called to sacrifice the boy. "I will not sacrifice the boy; he is no criminal," said the executioner. The butcher was called to sacrifice the boy. "I will not sacrifice the boy, he is no animal," said the butcher. The priests were told to sacrifice the boy. "We will not sacrifice the boy. That is not part of our responsibility," said the priests. Suddenly a voice rang across the sacrificial hall, "I will. I will. For 100 more cows." It was Ajigarta, Sunahshepa's father.
   Aghast, everybody looked at the father, and said, "When you sold your son, your reason was poverty. What is your reason now?" "Why should I feel ashamed," said Ajigarta, "When the king is not ashamed to sacrifice one of his subjects to save his son."
   Watching his father move towards the chopping block, axe in hand, Sunahshepa realised he had no one he could turn to, neither father nor king. In despair, he raised his head and sang prayers, begging for divine intervention. The scriptures say Varuna was moved by the prayers; he saved the boy, cured the king and all ended well. But did it actually?
   There are many Sunahshepas in the corporate world – victims of greed, stripped of livelihood because someone wants to protect favourites, someone wants reduction in head count and no one wants reduction in their own salary. Sunahshepas are created when leaders refuse to make sacrifices of their own.

 Sandeep's story has been told in the Mahabharata. His name was Sunahshepa then.

Points To Ponder

- Sunahshepa is one denied shelter by both father and king
- His sacrifice has nothing to do with king's health or father's poverty but has everything to do with greed
- Greed erodes the very notion of leadership

Friendship Day special...

Warning: BEWARE!!! This post may make u nostalgic about your old days...




This day has a great importance to all... especially those who had studied in hostels.. spent more than 3 yrs in hostel with their friends... For people like me... friends were everything... they shared all my happiness.. not only that... they were also the part of my sorrows.. they were those who helped me...

We never thought of Friendship day in our college (atleast till our 3rd yr) as everyday was a friendship day for us [:-)]. Oh yes... saath mein khaana.. saath mein sona... saath mein khelna... chahein woh patte (playing cards) haun ya phir TT(Table-Tennis), PC games & other games...

I still remember the days when we used to play TT from 10 pm till 9 am next day.. that too continuously.... playing badminton from 6 pm until the guard told that its time to close the Auditorium.... playing RON (Rise of Nations) all day-all night.... playing patte (playing cards) throughout the night (inspite of having Class test of 15% of our total end sem marks)...


I wil never forget all my trips with friends... chahe woh Rajdari falls ho... chahein trips to ghats of Ganga... playing in sand on ghats... (yes my dear.. its sand.. ) and woh ghats ki trip ke baad ki poori bhaji @ Lanka... ya phir woh 3rd yr ki so called all India EDUCATIONAL (INDUSTRIAL) TOUR....

I will never forget the day... when my bike skid and i had a narrow escape from death... (my bike skid on a turn of hill which had a minimum 200 ft valley just 3 ft away from me..)









And, how can i forget my Goa trip in my 2nd year holidays... The trip of my life which gave me a new direction to my life (professional life) along with a lots and lots of fun...






I cannot forget the days of NYF (National Youth fest) & Spandan which gave me opportunity to make new friends :-)


Raat ko 1 baje... lanka ki chai.... winters mein raat ko 1 baje icecream khana.... Bike/scooter race in a fog where u cannot see even 3 meters... that too in a winter of VARANASI with a temp of 8-10 Celsius with just a kurta-pyjama and a shawl....

I thank all my friends to make my life so great !!!!

Global Problems, and Power of I & We

If we give a thought, we can see several of the global problems which are currently have major impact on our environment.
Some of the major global problems which we are currently facing are :
1. Greenhouse Effect
2. Global warming
3. Depleting Ozone layer
4. Pollution
5. Depleting Non-Renewable sources of energy

Have we ever thought of what we can do regarding these problems? Have we ever thought that even a small step by each of us can bring a major difference?


There are some of the problems which certainly we can do about and that too alone. All these are very small things but matter a lot in saving the environment and our surroundings. If everyone takes some initiatives, we will be able to overcome those problems at least up to some extent.
But are we really working towards it??

Some of the things which can be done by the individuals are:
1. Turn off tap while brushing your teeth or shaving.
2. We should shut down our computer when not in use, instead of leaving it in stand by mode
3. Should take a reusable bag when going for shopping
4. Use public transport or cycle or walk for short distances
5. Adopt a car pool scheme with friend or colleague for journey to and from office.
6. Use of power saver light bulbs (CFLs)
7. Keep the refrigerator back clean so it work more efficiently
8. Timely maintenance of your vehicle (car, bike) or even the home appliances so that they donot consume much of power.
9. Avoid usage of polyethene. Always take a carry bag to market when we for shopping


Is the effort of individuals sufficient in such a critical condition? Certainly not. Some or the other efforts need to be taken by everyone... the corporate world, government everyone.

But, when it comes to the corporate groups, we generally think, what can be done on this front as corporate groups? Corporate groups can be of several category like, industries, corporate offices, organizations.
Everyone know that industries can play a very important role but we also know that these are among those which violate the conditions most... may be to makeup profit, increase their revenues.
Have anyone thought of methods by which other corporate groups can bring the difference? Moreover, have anyone bothered of even thinking about it?

Well, i was forced to think on this front by Ms. Naina Lal Kidwai, Deputy CEO, HSBC India when i had attended the seminar on Leadership week (PRODIGIES, Leadership Summit 2008 by Indian Institue of Management, Lucknow (IIML) ). When i ran the horses of my mind, i could find only the following methods:
1. Corporate firms/companies should have their vehicles to commute so as to reduce pollution. Also, it should encourage its employees for this.
2. (Atleast in IT industry) We can have centralized settings so that the monitors go in power saver mode if not used for more than some duration.
3. Have separate recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste bins. Recyclable waste can be recycled again.


But, she helped us think on the other ways which we (as corporates) can adopt. Some of them (some are specific to her domain ie, banks) which she specified are as below:
1. Loans to industries only if they satisfying the global pollution norms
2. Encouraging use of bio-diesel generators in the companies
3. Encouraging the employees in the Tree Plantation activities
4. Use of Solar energy in the offices


The third and most important organization which NEED to play its role is the Government, Government of various Countries.
Some of the ways by which the government and government organizations can help are as follows:
1. Enforcing strict laws and panelties to those who dont follow the norms.
2. Replacing all the traffic signals which operate on traditional bulbs to those using digital LEDs.
3. Replacing all the traditional street lights using bulbs to use light saving lamps.
4. Ban the bulbs (although it will be a gradual task especially in a country like India where we have voltage fluctuation problems which lead to non-lightening of tubelights..... especially in rural areas)


After this, i can say that we can change the world. The only thing is we need to think beyond the boundaries and break the BUT-OBVIOUS scenerios and we can find so many ways to work by which we can help prevent our beautiful nature.

PS: I would be happy to add any of the steps which we can take to save our NATURE and Environment which you can think of and are not listed above.
